Dojo Etiquette    

AMERICAN FREESTYLE KARATE BLACK BELT ACADEMY                                                        

1. When entering or leaving the Dojo, stand in the doorway, face the front, bow and say "OSU". This represents a mark or respect for the Dojo and the people in it.

2. If late for training, kneel at the side of the class towards the back, facing away in SEIZA (formal kneeling position). When the instructor acknowledges you, stand up, turn to the front , bow and say "OSU" then "Shitsurei Shimasu" (excuse me for disturbing), then quickly join the back of the class.

3. Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in the Dojo.

4. Always move quickly in class when instructed to do something. DO NOT STROLL.

5. Do not practice KUMITE unless instructed to do so.

6. Do not break rank for any reason, without asking permission from the instructor. If you must leave your position, do not walk between the instructor and the class. Walk behind the row you are in to either side and proceed from there.

7. Always address the instructor and seniors by their proper title (SEMPAI, SENSEI, SHIHAN, etc) inside the Dojo. Acknowledge them with a loud "OSU" when they speak to you.

8. Your training should be a serious matter. Do not laugh, giggle, talk or cause disruption during the class. You should always stand in FUDO DACHI  ( Immobile Stance)  when awaiting the next command.

9. All directions, by instructor, should be obeyed in the Dojo, without question. You will not be asked to do anything that your instructor has not done him/herself already. If you cannot keep up, do the best you can.

10. Keep fingernails and toenails short and clean.

11. During the break: No sitting on chairs, leaning against the wall or lying down. Do some training rather than waste time.

12. It is everyone's responsibility to ensure the Dojo is clean, tidy and safe at all times.  Clean up days will be assigned to Ranking Students.

13. Your karate-gi must be neat and washed clean at all times. Your belt should NEVER be washed, only aired dry. It symbolically contains the spirit of your hard training, and under no circumstances are male karatekas allowed to wear t-shirts or other clothing underneath their karate-gi.

14. Don't wear jewelry or watches during training. The TOMOE is the only jewelry Allowed 

15.Be Honest-Keep your Promises-NO EXCUSES!!!!!

AS A PEACEFUL WARRIOR , I SHALL CONDUCT MYSELF IN A MANNER WHICH WILL REFLECT CREDIT UPON MYSELF AND SOCIETY

 

AS A PEACEFUL WARRIOR , I SHALL BE LOYAL TO MY SCHOOL AND THE ART IT TEACHES.

 

AS A PEACEFUL WARRIOR , I SHALL BE HONEST AND EXERCISE INTEGRITY WITH THE PURPOSE OF DEVELOPING COOPERATION AND TRUST WITH MY FELLOW KARATE-KA AND MY TEACHERS.

 

AS A PEACEFUL WARRIOR, I SHALL EXERCISE RESTRAINT IN THE USE OF MY KARATE KNOWLEDGE, EMPLOYING IT ONLY IN FAIR COMPETITION OR IN DEFENSE OF MY LIFE, MY FAMILY, OR MY COUNTRY.

Code of Conduct

The purpose of the American Freestyle Karate Club Code of Conduct is to promote a Christ-like attitude in its learning environment and to encourage the development of positive Christian relationships among the students. Therefore, it is important that specific guidelines regarding behavior while attending Class.

  1. Students should show respect to adults at all times. A title (Mr., Mrs., Coach, etc.) should, therefore, be used when addressing an adult or higher ranking student.

     

  2. Students should show a high level of character and treat each other with respect, kindness, and compassion just as God commands us in Matthew 7:12, "So in everything do to others what you would have them do to you." Students are to refrain from gossip or the appearance of gossip, backbiting, and any form of strife. Whispering among students in the presence of those not included in the conversation is rude and can not be tolerated.

     

  3. Any manner of disruptive behavior in the dojo is considered an act of disrespect toward the teacher and classmates and can not be tolerated

     

  4. The dojo should be kept clean, orderly, and in a manner which shows an attitude of gratefulness.
     

  5. There will be no horseplay, running, or rough play during or between training classes.

     

  6. Use of profanity will not be permitted.

     

  7. Public displays of affection between sexes such as hand-holding, kissing, etc., will not be permitted.

     

  8. Students should not bring radios, tape players, tapes, pagers, ipods, cd players, or cell phones to school unless specific permission is given by the Instructors.

     

  9. Tobacco products, illicit drugs, alcohol, or weapons are not allowed in the dojo or at any sponsored event.

  10. Students should be prepared for classes by being punctual, completing assignments, and bringing necessary supplies.

     

  11. Parents are required to make certain that students are picked up or, if driving themselves, leave immediately following class. Students are not permitted to loiter on dojo premises, which includes parked cars or outside in the car lot..

     

  12. All driving students must use extreme caution while driving in the parking lot. Any driving deemed reckless by the Instructors will result in student's driving privileges being revoked.
